ARRIVAL + PARKING: 4:30 - 5 pm
Please arrive to the Community Center between 4:30 - 5 pm to park and get settled and geared up. We will depart for the trailhead at 5pm sharp to ascend to the top of the bald in time for moonrise.
FULL MOON HIKE: 5-7:30 pm
This will be the Hunter’s Full Moon, also known as the Drying Rice Moon, Blood Moon, or Freezing Moon.
We will be hiking to the top of the Little Sandymush Bald, ascending 1,500 feet just as the sun is setting and the full moon is rising over the mountains. From the top of the mountain, you can see Asheville and Mount Mitchell to the east and Mount Pisgah to the south. After the sun goes down we will descend the mountain back down to the community center.
Sunset & Moonrise happen around 6:20 pm
The trail is wide and clear with some steep sections and we will move as a group - we ask that if you plan to only hike a portion of the trail that you join us another time for safety reasons and with the general intention of doing the hike altogether.
Please bring a headlamp and/or flashlight, good hiking shoes, water, and cold-weather appropriate clothing (layers are best - you will heat up on the long uphill hike). You may also wish to bring hiking poles, star/constellation maps, or a camera.
Donations are encouraged as they help us maintain the trail and to support our mission of conservation!
